“Following through with its threats, the Chilean government has fined more than 100 pharmacies for refusing to sell a controversial form of an emergency contraception – the ‘morning-after’ pill.” Read the rest of the article here.
So, here’s my question: if Chile can do this, why can’t the US? I mean, all women 18 and over are supposed to have access to EC, right? I have an issue with the fact that pharmacists are allowed to deny it to women. People are at the mercy of their pharmacists to give them essential medication, and that includes EC. Not giving a woman EC, or another way to get EC, can be a very costly problem. By some estimates, it takes $350,417* to raise a child. And, face it, some women don’t have that kind of money.
So come on US! We’re not forcing pharmacists to take EC themselves; just give it to women like we’re promised they will.
*Ok, I’ll admit it. To find that stat I just ran a google search for “how much does it cost to raise a kid.” The site I found is here. You can run your own searches.
