Assembly Plans Final Vote On Emergency Contraception
POSTED: 3:22 pm CST January 10, 2008

MADISON, Wis. — The state Assembly plans to take a final vote Jan. 23 on a bill requiring hospitals to make emergency contraception available to rape victims.

The Assembly gave preliminary approval to the bill on Dec. 11. Assembly Majority Leader Jeff Fitzgerald of Horicon said Thursday that the bill will get its final vote on the 23rd. The Republican Fitzgerald says the bill will pass.

Opponents promised to fight the bill after a procedural move last time it was up kept the final vote from happening.

The bill would require Wisconsin emergency rooms to give information about the so-called morning-after pill to rape victims and dispense the drug at their request.

Ok, maybe I’m naive, but why on earth is this an issue?  Why are people against providing this to rape victims?  It’s not even like it’s *not* available in other capacities around the country, so why not provide it to rape victims?  They aren’t forcing them to take it, which would obviously be wrong, but I can see no reason not to supply it.

Does anybody want to back up the other side?  Or even play devil’s advocate and shed some light on this mysterious phenomenon?
