what is being taught at YOUR school?

02Feb08

A recent survey of Illinois public schools showed the least frequently taught topics [in their high school sex ed classes] were practical skills such emergency contraception (31%), condom use (34%), other contraceptive use (37%), and morally debated topics such as sexual orientation (33%) and abortion (39%).

This doesn’t make sense – schools know that teenagers are having sex, yet they are slightly more willing to talk about abortion than about emergency contraception? If more teenagers KNEW that EC existed, it seems they’d be a lot more likely to use it.

What do YOU think? If you’re in high school, what did you learn about emergency contraception there? Is it even talked about at all? Do your friends know it exists? Does your school do anything to dispel rumors about it? I’d love to hear what high schools are teaching.

I’ve been out of high school about three years now. It’s a touch hard to remember my sex ed classes, but I know that most other forms of birth control were mentioned.
