ALBANY – Planned Parenthood wants every sexually active person in the Capital Region to have a “Plan B.”

That’s why the health centers in the area participated in free Emergency Contraception Day.

There is a group of faithful who stand vigil in front of the Albany Planned Parenthood nearly every Friday.

“We intercede on a spiritual level because abortion is so widespread, a thousand babies are killed in the country each day,” anti-abortion protestor Kate Watson said.

But in reality, Schenectady Planned Parenthood spokeswoman Linda Scharf says, that’s a small portion of what they do. In fact, she says, they would much rather prevent pregnancies and ultimately abortions.

So Friday, the staff distributed for free Plan B, an emergency contraception.

“Accidents happen, condoms break or you miss a couple pills. This gives you a second chance to prevent pregnancy after unprotected sex,” Scharf said.

Emergency contraception must be taken within three to five days to be effective. Plan B advocates say EC does not terminate a pregnancy, but rather it proactively prevents it.

“We just encourage people to be prepared just in case this is available to men or women to help people make responsible choices,” Scharf said.

That’s the intent inside Planned Parenthood. But the people picketing outside have a mission too.

“We pray the Stations of the Cross, the rosary, for the women who regret abortions and for the conversion of hearts,” Watson said.

Plan B typically costs between $30 and $50.
