Last week I blogged that some Planned Parenthood’s in Indiana would be giving out free birth control. In Lafayette some people claimed that this was breaking city ordinances, but after an investigation it was found that they weren’t. Here’s the article:
Lafayette’s City Attorney said Monday that Planned Parenthood did not break any city ordinances when workers handed out Emergency Contraception Pills last week. Attorney Ed Chosnek said after complaints from some city residents, he looked into whether Planned Parenthood violated a city ordinance by handing out the E.C. Pills.
Chosenk said Planned Parenthood dispensed the E.C. pills in compliance with federal regulations. It also has licensed staff members who are authorized to dispense prescription medicine and those staff members are exempt from the Lafayette Ordinance, according to Chosnek. He said there are several federal restrictions Planned Parenthood follows. Chosnek said since the FDA already regulates this non-prescription contraceptive, any local ordinance could not supercede those regulations.
The E.C. pill is a pill women can take up to 120 hours after unprotected sex to prevent pregnancy.
