I’ve personally had two expeirences with EC. Once, it was Saturday night(or Sunday morning, rather), after a party. Both I and my partner were moderately drunk, and the condom broke without our noticing. It was freshman year of college, I wasn’t in a relationship, and I had lost my virginity only three or so months before. I wasn’t on BC at the time, so I went to the campus nurse to be tested and got the pill two days later, on Monday, as soon as they opened.

The second time, my boyfriend and I had already used the one condom he had, and ended up having sex later in the night. I was on the pill at the time, but had only recently started it and wasn’t sure if it had taken full effect yet, so again, I went to the nurse.
I’ve also taken my friend, when she didn’t want to go alone, gone another time with my best friend, and actually gone and picked it up for a friend before, when she was too embarassed about getting it herself.

I’m extremely glad that we have EC available on campus, as it’s not easy to get in our town, and on a campus that has as high a rate of partying as mine does, I’m sure there would be a lot more unplanned pregnancies than there are now.

Last May I got a phone call from my little sister. Actually, I got seven of them. Sometimes, you just don’t want to talk to your thirteen-year-old sister. Finally, after a couple hours I called her back. She was at her best friends house, and she was crying. After assuring her that I would not be mad at her, no matter what she said, she told me that she’d taken drugs the night before and had sex with a guy from school; they hadn’t used a condom.

My first inclination was to get mad; she’s my little sister, she’s thirteen, and she was telling me that she’d been drinking and having sex. At the time, I was nearly twenty, and had never had more than a glass of wine. I didn’t have sex until I was 18. I’ve never been in a situation that would require me to get EC. This was a foreign situation to me – but my first responsibility was to make sure my little sister was safe, and save the lectures for later.

She didn’t want to tell our mom, and knowing that I couldn’t do anything from across the country (I was living in Washington DC at the time, and she was back home in Los Angeles), I called a friend, and asked her to take my sister to the nearest Planned Parenthood – the Planned Parenthood I’d volunteered at for nearly all of high school. She took her, stayed with her, supervised her while she took the first pill, and took her out to lunch and a movie afterwards. And, while I was glad my sister was ok, I was still really mad.

I wasn’t necessarily mad at my sister; I understand my mother has no rules, no discipline, and sets next to no standards for us. I was mad that my sister was in a social group that would allow things like this to happen. And I was mad that she didn’t know what to do in this situation – she knew about Plan B, but she had no idea how to go about obtaining it. Most of her friends didn’t even know it existed.

So, when I was approached with the opportunity to blog for Oops!, I jumped at the opportunity. I want to help spread the word about EC, and let girls and women out there know that there IS something you can do for yourself after unprotected sex to prevent pregnancy. No thirteen year old girl should be having a baby. No woman should have to have a baby she doesn’t want.

If you have a friend, family member, or even just a casual acquaintance ask you about EC, don’t judge, don’t get mad, don’t criticize or make unnecessary comments. Help them out, let them know that it’s ok, and be there for them – they obviously trust you, which is always a good thing.

From time to time we will post stories from REAL women who have used EC. We’d be happy if you would submit any personal encounters you have with EC, either positive or negative. Here’s our first story:

First, I’d like to tell you that usually I’m on the pill and have always used a condom with my boyfriend of 6 months. Then I ran out of pills. Then me and my bf broke up and made up w/in a week (my fault, I deserved it). In the heat of the moment we had unprotected sex. The next morning we drove to Walgreens and got some Plan B emergency contraception (EC). We’re now back to condoms until I get more pills.

I just wanted to share that with you guys, so that if anyone has unprotected sex (or the condom broke or you missed pills and didn’t use a condom or whatever) will know that there’s no shame in going out and getting the tools they need to protect themselves from an unwanted pregnancy.

Twice before I have taken friends to get Plan B. The first time, a male friend caled me and told me that he and his gf had a condom break. This was back before EC was approved for over-the-counter sale, so I drove them to Planned Parenthood to get a perscription, then to the pharmacy to get it.

The second time, a female friend called me because she had unprotected sex while very drunk. By now, EC was approved for over-the-counter sale, so I just went for moral support.

For me and my friends, it was very easy and not traumatic at all. You just go to the pharmacy window and ask for Plan B. The pharmacist will ask to see your ID and you must be 18 or older (if you aren’t, get a friend to get it for you). For me, Plan B cost $45 but I think it will vary in different areas.
